I think search marketing is a great way for companies to break through the clutter that is the internet. You could spend an entire day searching for information about a topic of interest just due to the amount of content that exists.
I think it's great that search engines are offering this service to companies at reasonable rates, giving them the oppurtunity to reach their audience simply by being the first link to show up during a Google search.
Despite the fact that I think it's a great tool, I'm still unsure of how effective it actually is. I can honestly say I have never clicked on a sponsored link, not because they haven't caught my attention, but because I know it's a paid advertisement.
There are however a lot of benefits of search marketing. It's a great way to make your site easier to locate, improves your ranking and can significantly increase your traffic. Only time will tell if search marketing really is beneficial to companies.

Product Placement & Sponsorship
Product placement seems to be inevitable. You can find it in almost every show you watch, and it seems to be in all the movies. A lot of people seem to have a real issue with this. I on the other hand don't really care. Good for Advertisers for finding a way to incorporate advertising into movies and TV shows.
When searching the internet, there seemed to be tons of complaints regarding this topic. In my opinion product placement complaints are becoming about as old as the product placement shots themselves. Why not take advantage of an oppurtunity to advertise where ever you can.
When you think about it, if you were take a video camera and film you and your friends out and about in the real world, there would probably actually be even more product placement displayed. Just think about it. People every where are walking around with brand names displayed on their clothing, shoes and accessories. You see a guy walking down the street with a bottle of Pepsi in his hand, or one of the millions of people who are walking around listening to tunes on their iPods.
The reality is brands exist, and people are generally comfortable in announcing to the world what their brand preferences are, so why not just let advertisers use product placement to their advantage and if someone really has a problem with it, they're just going to have to learn to turn off their televisions, or walk around with their eyes closed for that matter.

Branded Utility
While on the web searching for information on branded utility, I came across what is known as permission marketing. Permission marketing is when marketers ask permission before they send ads to possible customers. It's commonly used by some internet marketers, email marketers and telephone marketers. Customers have to "opt-in" first, instead of having people "opt-out" after the ads have been sent. I think this is a great thing to offer. It's much less intrusive because the people who are receiving the ads are receiving them because they want to and the information is of some sort of interest to them.
Companies often miss oppurtunities to use branded utility. How perfect would it have been if Kodak teamed up with the website Flickr. The people who visit this site all have the common interest in photography. Tea Buddy is another site that a compnay like Tentley could have had great sucess with.
Marketers need to open their eyes and start looking into new trends in advertising that could prove to be beneficial for their company.

The Broadband Revolution
So, I was asked to see how long I could go without watching anything on TV and only using the internet as a source of viewing videos. Luckily for me, I rarely watch TV due to a lack of free time, so I was able to go a full week without watching TV. For me, when I have the time to sit down and watch a movie or a TV show, I always find what I looking to watch on the internet. I've come fond of the TV show Weeds, but I always miss it when it airs, but Showcase posts all episodes of weeds the day after they air, so I'm still able to keep up-to-date on the show.
When it comes to discovering an effective way to advertise on YouTube, that's not an easy task. People hate when they don't have total control over being able to fast forward and rewind whatever they're watching on the net, making it difficult to get a message across to the viewers. If there was a way to only lock the viewers abilities to have control over the video at the very beginning of the video, and then giving control back when the advertisement has finished playing then the viewers don't feel like they've lost all control, but advertisers could at least be able to get their message across to the viewers.
Regardless of how they decide to go about effectively advertising on YouTube, it should be done because it could prove to be very beneficial.

Web 2.0
What an amazing and dangerous tool.
Web 2.0 has so many benefits. Allows you to search for anything your heart desires, it's a great learning tool, great way to connect with your friends and family and a great resource tool. Which is what make web 2.0 so amazing, but there is a downside. Because of the vast amount of information that can infact be found on the web, people have access to things that they probably shouldn't. People have too much freedom when it comes to what they can place on the web, and because it's growing at such a rapid rate, it's becoming harder and harder to monitor. It's a place where people can say what they want and show what they want, and anyone who is anyone can view it. Companies are actually able to boost their own brand, and play it off like it's a real consumer giving their review, which I feel isn't right.
I think that web 2.0 is a great tool that everyone should have access to, but it would be great if there was concrete ways to monitor all the content, as well as who is viewing it.

Social Networking
As much as people will sit there and complain about sites like Facebook and MySpace, I think they're great. I've moved around a lot and Facebook has allowed my to keep in touch with old friends that I haven't seen in years. Facebook is also an easy way to make plans, invite people to a party, etc.
When it comes to sites this these, I think people just need to be aware of the content they are placing on the site. Employers are catching on to this, and reading up on what their employees do in their spare time, which in turn could result in the lose of their job. I don't agree with employers doing this, but the fact is they are, so either watch what your putting up, or just ensure that your privacy settings are set properly.
Seeing as how these Social Networking sites have so much traffic, it's the perfect way for advertisers to target such a key demographic. I think it would be so beneficial for advertisers to target based on location as well as the interests of a specific user. I think that advertisers could do a lot with social networking sites, and reach a lot of people.

Guerilla Marketing
Guerilla tactics are an excellent way to get your company/business noticed without having to spend a fortune. Guerilla marketing has to be one of my favorite forms of advertising. It's impactful, creative and fun. The possibilities are endless and it's a great way for companies to maximize on their creative potential. If a company wants to get noticed, and remind on the minds of their consumers, Guerilla marketing is the way to go.
Here is an example of Guerilla Marketing I found while surfing the web that I thought was pretty clever:

Blogging About Blogs
I've never been big on blogs. They are usually something I just happen to stumble on while trying to search things on the web.
Blogging is a great way for people who share a common interest to state their opinions and share their views about a particular topic. Blogging is becoming such a huge trend, which makes it a perfect vehicle for advertising.
People can become very dedicated to a particular blog, constantly keeping up to date on new postings. The author of that blog now has the full attention of its readers. What better way to have your product get noticed then having a blogger write good things about it. Word of mouth is key in getting your product notice. This could also have a reverse effect though. If a blogger had a bad experience with a product/service, that could really bring a business down.
I think blogging is great, as long as advertisers don't start taking advantage of impressionable consumers. If a business is paying a blogger to glorify their product, I'd want to know.
